Office 365 - Admin Center

Microsoft Office 365 is a cloud-based service for businesses of varied sizes that helps them create SharePoint sites to share documents and other data, Exchange mails, Lync unified communication, etc. Instead of installing and deploying SharePoint Server 2013, Exchange Server 2013 and Lync 2013 on premises, organizations can sign to SharePoint Online to provide employees with collaboration and information management capabilities that work with familiar Office applications.

To administer, manage and monitor Office 365 with SharePoint Server 2013, Exchange Server 2013 and Lync 2013 for an organization, we need a one stop location administrator. Microsoft has provided us Admin Center for Office 365, where administrator can control SharePoint Server 2013, Exchange Server 2013, Lync 2013 and other relevant products of Office 365.

The Admin Center is the central location for all the corresponding components of Office 365, SharePoint, Lync and Exchange, etc. The Global administrator users of the Microsoft Online Services Portal will have permissions to manage service licenses, users and groups, domains, and subscribed services.



The Admin Center page provides links for managing licenses and general system configuration. You can check on planned maintenance, enter a service request, and verify billing information. The first user created when the account was set up is configured as a Global administrator role. This gives them the ability to set up and manage additional user accounts as well as general account configuration. In the later part of the article, we will see how to create and add new roles and users.


The Global administrator users will be having the dashboard view of Microsoft Office 365 environment. The following screen capture will show the dashboard view and some of the key areas have been highlighted.


Let’s see what the key areas highlighted in are with numbers in the screen capture.

  1. Navigation links to all key areas to manage and administer Office 365 environment.
  2. Service Overview will show service health, inactive email users and service requests.
  3. Based on the Service Overview option user can have the corresponding information.
  4. Shortcut URL to administrators for managing Office 365 environment.
  5. Admin link to specific service SharePoint, Exchange and Lync, etc.

Domain Setup

Office 365 also provides an Enterprise solution that is prepared towards larger and more grown organizations. This kind of organization will likely already have an on-premise solution and want to move to a cloud-based solution. Here in this section, we will setup the Office 365 for our organization.

Here, we will see how to connect to existing domain and active directory details will be synced and reused with Office 365. Here, the administrator will have two options to setup the domain and build the platform in the Office 365 cloud for the organization. The following are the two options for the domain setup.

  • Basic
  • Custom

In the following screen capture, you will visualize how the setup page will be for administrators.


Basic: The basic setup option is mainly focused on for the organizations who wanted to create new users and mailboxes in the cloud, and can import the emails to cloud and make it up to run with minimal effort.

Custom: The custom setup option is for migrating on-premises messaging systems. Basically for large or complex IT environments to Synchronize directories, Deploy Active Directory Federation Services, single sign-on, set up hybrid messaging with Exchange Server, Support shared address book and messaging coexistence with an on-premises email system.

Here in this demonstration, we all see how to setup using the basic option. Now click on the basic setup button as referred in the following screen capture image to proceed further.


Now you will be navigated to the next page with list of all the configuration activity listed out with navigation hyperlinked. The following is the screen capture for your reference.


  • Add a domain.
  • Add users, assign licenses, and create mailboxes.
  • Help your users get set up.
  • Configure your domain for email delivery.
  • Import user data (Optional).
  • Lync Online and your SharePoint team site are ready to use.

Adding a domain is the first step. Only domain names that you own can be added to the domain list. If you don't own a domain name, you can purchase one from a domain registrar, and then return to add it to Office 365. Here in this demonstration, we’re adding a domain name called ‘agcindia’ to the domain list.


Once after adding the domain name, the next step will be the domain verification page. One should be the owner of the domain, which is about to be added in the Office 365.


Next is the verification process, to begin the verification process, we should add a specific record to the DNS records at your domain registrar. We then look for the record to verify ownership. Each DNS provider supports different features, so we provide two ways that you can verify ownership: by creating a TXT record or an MX record.


Once after all the verification process is completed, the user will be navigated to the domain list page. Where you can manage multiple domains; edit, troubleshoot, and DNS settings, etc.


Users and Groups

Users and groups help the global administrator to manage users profiles, security groups, bulk import users, etc. Let’s start exploring options available in the users and group section.


Here in the above users and group section, you can see the users listed under the active users section. First let’s see how to add single user using add option '+' highlighted in the above screen capture.11-office365-sujata-computers-pvt-ltd

Fill in the mandatory details as listed in the above screen capture, the additional details are optional to fill in to create user.


For the same user, we can provide the administrator role based on our need. Just select the Yes option under the Assign Role and greyed ‘Select a Role’ drop down list will show you a list of different administrator roles available.13-office365-sujata-computers-pvt-ltd

Next step will be assigning the license for the user under the Office 365; we can assign users to specific set of the products under the Office 365 environment. Here in the following screen capture, you can see for my account; I no longer have any more licenses to assign for the specific user. In this case, the user will be created in the Office 365 cloud with no products to access in the Microsoft Office 365.


Now let’s see how the groups are created and managed in the Office 365. To create new security group, use the add option highlighted in the below screen capture.



When you click a report name, you will see a report graph. You can:

Filter the data: To see only the data you are interested in, use the drop-down filters above the graph, or the time-span indicators below the graph.

See related information: For some reports, there will be additional information in a table below the graph. In addition, related reports are linked to from the thumbnail-sized pictures to the right of the main graph.

Next year Microsoft is releasing its new operating system and its next Windows iteration will not be Windows 9 or Windows 8.2. Instead it has skipping straight to 10. A lot of people are making fun of this. People like order, and skipping numbers bothers the kindergartner in all of us.

According to me some plausible reasons for skipping directly to 10 might be:-

  1. Christening new windows OS as windows 9 will send the message that it is merely upgrade of windows 8.1 and there is nothing new in it
  2. In June 2015 Apple is going to launch IOS 9 and MS just to prove its superiority, jumped to number 10.
  3. The Japanese consider 9 to be an unlucky number because it sounds similar to the Japanese word for pain. What's Mr. T's prediction for Windows 9?

Anyways let’s see some salient features of windows 10.After using Windows 10 for almost a week, I’ve discovered some neat little changes and features that Microsoft hasn’t yet discussed — smart tweaks that, if you’re a mouse-and-keyboard user looking for a reason to upgrade from Windows 7/8.1, you will be very pleased with. Let’s dive straight in with my favorite secret/hidden features of Windows 10.

Explorer now has a “Home” tab

In the last few versions of Windows, opening My Computer or a new Explorer window would
show you your computer’s various storage locations and shortcuts to default folders like
Documents and My Pictures. In Windows 10, you now end up in a new view called Home, which
shows Favorites, Frequent Folders, and Recent Files.

You can finally put the Recycle Bin on the taskbar Rather than having to poke around Explorer or minimize everything and find the Recycle Bin icon on the Desktop, in Windows 10 you can now add the Recycle Bin to both the taskbar and the Start menu. Yes, that is the sound of many brains exploding as they catastrophically realize the enormity of this change

The Windows 10 Start menu is resizable

This one is a bit odd: You can make the Windows 10 Start menu as tall or as wide as you like. If
you want to have a Start menu that takes up the entire left side of your screen, or a narrow strip
across the taskbar, then that’s now possible. The taskbar itself is also resizable, which means you can do weird stuffs. I am not sure if this is second bit is intentional or not. A resizable Start menu is quite cool, though! Cortana is almost definitely coming to Windows 10

After a little bit of poking around (searching for “Cortana” in Explorer) I found a lot of references to Cortana in Windows 10 Technical Preview; there’s even aWindows.Cortana.dll, just sitting there in the System32 directory. You also get a bunch of Cortana-related hits if you search for “Cortana” within the Registry Editor.None of this is to say that Cortana is definitely coming to Windows 10 — there are lots of other reasons for those files/registry entries being there, such as the ghost of an early internal test — but I’d say it’s pretty likely. We should hopefully see Cortana in the next beta of Windows 10.

Notifications and toasts in Windows 10
While Windows 10′s rumored Notification Tray isn’t yet in the Technical Preview, there are some new pretty toasts/notifications that pop up in the top right corner of the screen. These notifications appear to replace the speech bubbles that used to pop out of the system tray (the bottom right corner of the taskbar, unless you’re one of those heathens who has moved the taskbar to a non-standard location).

The Command Prompt is getting so much more than just Ctrl-V
Somewhat unbelievably, despite the Windows 10 unveil event being only 40 minutes long, Microsoft actually dedicated a couple of minutes to Windows 10′s Command Prompt (cmd). At the time, Joe Belfiore told that Command Prompt is finally gaining the ability to paste with Ctrl-V (previously, you had to right click > paste). It turns out, there’s a lot more, too. If you right click Command Prompt’s title bar and head to Properties then Experimental, you get a bunch of new options (see above). In fact, you have to turn on the experimental options before you can use Ctrl-V to paste. With experimental options turned on, you can also use Shift-arrow keys to mark text (for copying and pasting with Ctrl-C/Ctrl-V). The other options are mostly self-explanatory, though I am still trying to discover what the “extended edit keys” are (let me know in the comments if you’ve found some!)

Windows 10 keyboard shortcuts for virtual desktops, improved snapping, task view
One of Windows 10′s bigger new features is virtual desktops — additional instances of the Desktop that you can use to better organize your workspace. There’s also improved snapping, and a new view called Task View that’s kind of like Alt-Tab, but it incorporates your virtual desktops as well. All of these new features have associated keyboard shortcuts to make using them a cinch.
Task View is opened up with Windows Key-Tab. It looks very like the new Alt-Tab interface, but it stays open after you let go of the keys. You can also add, remove, and manage virtual desktops from this interface.
Windows Key-Ctrl-Arrow (left or right) switches you to the next virtual desktop on the left or right.
Windows Key-Ctrl-D creates a new virtual desktop. Windows Key-Ctrl-F4 closes the current virtual desktop.
Windows Key-Up arrow and Windows Key-Down arrow can now be used to snap the current app to the top or bottom of the screen (this is in addition to Win-Left and Win-Right for snapping to the left and right of the screen). Tapping these shortcuts multiple times creates different effects: Tapping Win-Up once maximizes an app; twice snaps it to the top. Win-Down once snaps to the bottom; twice minimizes it. You can also use Win-Left/Right to move apps incrementally across a multi-monitor setup.

  • Software Assurance is valid for 2 years, it is optional for customer to renew it thereafter.
  • Whatever is the latest version of a product customer has installed, he can still use it after the expiry of SA. It is then recommended to renew the SA.
  • The only way to purchase Windows Enterprise desktop OS license is to purchase Software Assurance along with eligible Windows editions license.

Licensing Program Under Which Software Assurance (SA) Can Be Bought -

  • Open license (MOLP) - One-time purchase. Software Assurance is optional in most of the products, only in some products SA comes bundled. It is a permanent/perpetual license.
  • Open Value License (OVL) - 3 years contract with price locking. After 3 years, license become permanent / perpetual and SA renewal is optional. SA is built-in along with license.
  • Select Plus - 3 years contract with price locking and bulk discounts. quantity purchase commitments required. SA is optional to purchase in this contract. Recommended when you have equal or more than 250 users and if you don't mind singing agreements.

With this new offerings, Microsoft have started offering better document collaboration with the help of SharePoint and OneDrive. Virtualization may be defined as creating virtual version of something. In IT industry in case of server virtualization, it is all about creating multiple virtual machines (guest) on a single hardware server (host). Originated in 1960s, it involves logical distribution of hardware resources among different guests. With the passage of time it gained popularity because of following benefits: -

Cost :- When one is planning to erect a datacenter, major investment goes into physical hardware. Apart from that, to run a data center, one needs space, electricity, false flooring, air conditioning, facilities to repel rodents etc: If one opts for virtualization technology one is saving a lot on above mentioned cost. Lesser hardware requirement means less space, less electricity consumption and less cooling facilities. And this boils down to less investment.

Back Up :- The compulsory item of datacenter is back up solution. Taking back up of virtualized server and its redeployment is less time consuming then that of taking back up of hardware server and redeploying it.  Firing up a snapshot is faster than rebooting a typical hardware server.

Testing Environment :- If one has testing environment then virtualization is the best option. One can create virtual machines (in accordance with the licensing policy of software) and can use it for testing purpose. If a terrible mistake happens and machine crashes new VM can be created in jiffy.

Azure gives you the flexibility in terms of your client can see the progress of the application development and can make corrections if things are not going as per your client's requirement. Secondly, your client does not have to pay for the whole infrastructure that you might have built traditionally for the development of application. Client will pay only as per the usage of the Azure.

How does the development happens on Azure? Do you need any additional skills to develop an application?
Not really, you should know .Net programming languages to develop Azure application. You can also download latest Azure SDK and use it along with Visual Studio which is available in Azure itself. Because the Azure environment is much like the standard Windows environment, it's easier to create a cloud version of an existing Windows application.

1.How to try Azure?

Step 1: To start the trial of Azure, you will require Live ID which can be signed up here, if you don't already have one. It is the same ID that you use for accessing VLSC portal on which your organization's Microsoft license details.

Step 2: You can sign up for free trial here: Note - You will need valid credit card details with you to activate the trial. Contact Sujata Computers Pvt Ltd, if you do not have credit card but want to see and try Azure. As you can buy Azure through Volume License as well.


Free Azure account to using the free developer tools, and covers each of the six major offerings from Azure:
Virtual machines
Website development
Mobile Services for authenticating users and storing data
The Cloud Services API development and deployment tools
Data Services, which incorporates SQL, Table, and Blob storage
App services like Service Bus for messaging.

2.Creating Virtual Machine on Azure

Creating Virtual Machine (VM) on Azure for Windows and Linux is almost same and easy as soon as you get an access to Azure.
Provide the public facing DNS name for the Virtual Machine, select from Azure platform supplied list of VM images, enter a user name, password, and the region.

3. Creating and deploying Azure website

Select the New->Websites option within the Preview portal:
Provide the name of the Website you want to create, choose where in the world you want to run it, and then click the “Create Website” button and it will be ready to use in seconds.

5.Pricing and parameters to be considered while buying Azure

Taking advantage of resources in the cloud allows you to decrease your costs for building and expanding your on-premises infrastructure. You can also reduce the cost of IT administration because the hardware and its security as well as maintenance is being taken care of for you, off-premises. The cost of creating, testing, debugging, and distributing Web-based applications goes down because you have to pay only for the computer processing time and storage space you need at a given time.
Windows Azure pricing will be based on consumption, with a per-hour fee that's dependent on the size of the instance for Azure computing services and per-month or per-transaction fees for Azure storage services based on data size.

You can purchase Azure through three options -
Pay-as-you-go online

Volume license through Sujata Computers Pvt Ltd - for this, you will not mandatorily need credit card.
Enterprise Agreement (EA), if your organization have one.

Having in mind the above mentioned key points in moving application to Windows Azure, I highly encourage you to play around and test.
